Crowns Bridges Brisbane| Aminya St Dental Mansfield

When a tooth is too damaged for a filling to fix, or when a gap from a missing tooth is affecting your bite, your dentist will likely start talking about crowns and bridges. These are among the most common restorative dental treatments.

Aminya St dental we offer both porcelain and gold options, and our recommendation is always based on what's clinically appropriate for you. Our laboratory work is done locally in Brisbane and not sent overseas.

What is a dental crown?

A crown (sometimes called a cap) is a custom-made cover that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gumline up. It restores the tooth's shape, strength, and appearance essentially becoming the new outer surface of the tooth.

Crowns are typically recommended when:

  • A tooth has extensive decay that a filling can't adequately restore

  • A tooth has cracked or fractured significantly

  • A tooth has been treated with a root canal (which leaves the tooth more brittle)

  • An existing large filling has failed and there isn't enough healthy tooth structure to support a new one

  • A tooth is severely worn down from grinding

The crown doesn't replace the tooth; the natural root will remain in place. It simply protects and strengthens what's left.

What Materials Are Used for Crowns?

Modern crowns are most commonly made from porcelain or ceramic, which closely mimic the look of natural teeth. Gold and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns are also available and may be recommended in specific situations. Gold, for example, is exceptionally durable and is sometimes preferred for back teeth where appearance is less of a concern.

The right material depends on which tooth is being treated, how much biting force it bears, and your aesthetic preferences. Your dentist will discuss the options with you.

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge is used when a tooth is missing entirely. It works by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Those neighbouring teeth are prepared and crowned, and the false tooth is suspended between them literally bridging the space.

A bridge is a fixed restoration, meaning it's cemented in place and functions like natural teeth. It's not removed for cleaning the way a denture is.

Bridges are usually considered when:

  • One or more adjacent teeth are missing

  • The surrounding teeth are healthy enough to support the bridge

  • A dental implant isn't suitable or preferred

Which one do you need?

Bridge

When your tooth is still there but is too damaged to stand on its own

When the tooth is gone and needs replacing

Sometimes both are involved in the same treatment, a bridge uses crowns on the anchor teeth to hold the structure together.

What Does the Crown or Bridge Process Involve?

Both treatments follow a similar process and typically require two appointments.

First appointment: The tooth (or anchor teeth, for a bridge) is shaped and reduced slightly to make room for the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the crown or bridge is custom-made to fit your mouth precisely. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.

Second appointment (usually 1–2 weeks later): The temporary is removed, the permanent crown or bridge is checked for fit and colour, and then cemented into place.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Some sensitivity in the days following is normal and usually settles quickly.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

With good care, dental crowns typically last 10-15 years, and many last considerably longer. Bridges have a similar lifespan, though they can be subject to more wear given that they span a gap.

What affects longevity most is oral hygiene particularly cleaning under a bridge with floss or interdental brushes along with avoiding habits like grinding, chewing ice, or biting hard objects. Regular check-ups allow your dentist to monitor any wear before it becomes a bigger problem.
