An alternative to bridgework in replacing one or more missing teeth is a dental implant. A threaded titanium ‘root’ is embedded in the bone and supports a crown. We will co-ordinate treatment with the surgical team and restore the implant when it is ready to support the new tooth.

A dental implant is a small titanium, post-surgically placed into the jawbone that acts as an artificial tooth root and once it is bonded with the bone a crown is attached on top to look and function just like a natural tooth. Unlike dentures or bridges which are temporary an implant is a permanent procedure and they don’t affect neighbouring teeth and helps preserve the jawbone health over time.

At Aminya St dental we co-ordinate treatment with the surgical team and restore the implant when it is ready to support the new tooth.

Types of dental implants

  • Single tooth implant : this is the most common type of implant around Brisbane and is ideal if you’ve lost a single tooth and want a natural looking result.

  • Implant supported bridge : this is used when multiple adjacent teeth are missing. Two implants support a bridge spanning the gap, avoiding the need for an implant per tooth.

  • Implant supported dentures : for patients missing most or all teeth, a full arch of teeth is supported by 4-6 strategically placed implants. This is a more involved procedure but is a far more stable option when compared to traditional dentures.

What to expect in the procedure

  • Consultation & assessment - X rays and scans determine bone density and whether you’re a suitable candidate for an implant. Bone grafting may be required if there is an insufficient bone.

  • Implant placement - the titanium post is surgically inserted under local anesthesia. Most patients have reported that it is more comfortable than expected.

  • Healing period - for the bone to heal it takes approximately 3-6 months and a temporary restoration may be placed during this time.

  • Crown fitting - once healed a custom made crown will be attached. This will be your final, permanent tooth.

How to look after your implant

Once an implant is fully healed it is considerably low maintenance, but proper care needs to be ensured as the crown is still prone to plaque and the surrounding gum tissues need to stay healthy for the implant to last.

  • Brush twice and floss daily

  • Use a non abrasive toothpaste

  • Wear a mouthguard if you grind a teeth

  • Book regular appointments with your dentist
