Root Canal Treatment: How It Saves Your Natural Tooth and What to Expect

Inside every tooth, beneath the hard enamel and dentine there is a soft inner chamber called the pulp. It contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue and while it's essential during tooth development, a fully formed adult tooth can function perfectly well without it.
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and seals everything to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored usually with a crown and continues to function normally in the mouth.
At Aminya St Dental we have been helping patients for over 40 years with root canal treatments for patients across Mansfield Brisbane. For straightforward cases treatment is carried out in house. When a case is more complex we refer to a trusted network of specialist endodontists. We coordinate that process closely and continue to manage your general dental care throughout, including placing the final crown once treatment is complete.
Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?
The pulp becomes infected or inflamed when bacteria reach the inside of the tooth. This can happen through:
Deep decay that has progressed past the outer layers of the tooth and reached the nerve
A cracked or fractured tooth that allows bacteria to enter
Trauma : a knocked or jarred tooth can damage the pulp even without an obvious crack
A failed or very large filling that no longer adequately seals the tooth
Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth over many years
Once the pulp is infected, it cannot heal on its own. Without treatment, the infection spreads to the surrounding bone and tissue, and the tooth will ultimately need to be removed.
What Are the Signs You Might Need a Root Canal?
Some infected teeth are identified at a routine check-up before any symptoms appear. When symptoms do occur, they can include:
Severe, persistent toothache, especially pain that throbs or wakes you at night
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed
Pain when biting or applying pressure to the tooth
Swelling or tenderness in the gum near the tooth
A pimple-like bump on the gum (a dental abscess)
Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
If you're experiencing any of these, see a dentist promptly the sooner an infection is treated, the more straightforward the procedure tends to be.
What Does the Root Canal Procedure Involve?
Root canal treatment typically requires two appointments, though complex cases may need more.
First appointment : cleaning and disinfection- The area is numbed thoroughly with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not pain. A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and clean. The dentist accesses the pulp chamber, removes the infected tissue, and carefully cleans and shapes each root canal with fine instruments. An antibacterial solution is used to flush and disinfect the canals. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth between visits.
Second appointment : sealing and restoration - Once the dentist is satisfied the infection has resolved, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the space permanently. The tooth is then restored in most cases, a crown is recommended to protect the now more brittle tooth structure and restore full function.
The procedure itself is performed under local anaesthetic and is generally no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Some tenderness in the days following is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief that is recommended by your dentist.
How Much Does Root Canal Treatment Cost in Australia?
Costs vary depending on which tooth is being treated (front teeth have fewer canals than molars, making them less complex), the severity of the infection, and whether a specialist endodontist is required.
As a general guide in Australia:
Single-canal tooth (front teeth): approximately $1,500–$2,000
Multi-canal tooth (premolars and molars): approximately $2,000–$3,500+
Endodontist (specialist) fees are generally higher than general dentist fees
A crown to restore the tooth afterward is an additional cost - typically $1,500–$2,500
These are indicative ranges. Your dentist will provide a written treatment plan with itemised costs before any work begins.
Type | Cost |
Front teeth (single straight roots) | $900-$1500 |
Premolars (one or two roots) | $1100 - $2000 |
Molars (three to four roots) | $1500-$3400 |
Does Medicare Cover Root Canal Treatment?
Standard Medicare does not cover root canal treatment for adults. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers basic dental services for eligible children aged 2–17, but root canal treatment is generally not included under the scheme.
